Flood-affected families gradually return home


Families displaced by floods in the past few days, are now gradually returning to their homes. Minister Susil Premajayanth said that about 88 percent of the families displaced due to floods in the environs of Colombo have returned to their homes.
Accordingly, 5504 families had left for their homes. Arrangements had been made to meet their essential requirements including food.

The Minister emphasized the need to reconstruct the drainage network and canals. During a special discussion in Colombo on the sudden disaster, the Minister intimated to the officials to submit recommendations with regard to reconstruction.

The Ambagamuwa area in Nuwara Eliya has experienced a landslide due to the torrential rains. A group including Minister Arumugam Thondaman visited the area. He gave instructions to the officials to immediately rebuild 38 houses that were destroyed by landslide.

Meanwhile, a group including Minister Rajitha Senaratne undertook a visit to inquire into the needs of families who had been displaced by floods in the Kalutara district. In addition to providing dry rations to the effected families, discussions were also held on long term
strategies to safeguard the district from disasters such as floods
