Weeklong celebrations mooted


The Government has proclaimed the week from November 15 to November 22 as a week for countrywide celebrations to commemorate the inauguration of the second term of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said State Management Reforms Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka at a media briefing at the Mahaweli Centre yesterday.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be sworn-in for the second term on November 19 at 9.30 am at the Presidential Secretariat building in Colombo.

“The main ceremony will be a national occasion. The President is not for one political party and he is for everyone. He is the leader of all citizens,” he said.

The Deyata Sevana, National Tree Planting Campaign will be launched islandwide to plant 1.1 million trees within 11 minutes. The campaign will start at 10.07 am. The objective is to protect environment.

All Sri Lankans should support this task despite their political opinions. Farmers, schoolchildren and village level government officers will assist in this task, said Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.

The Environmental Ministry and Mahaweli Authority would facilitate this task.

These trees, it is believed they will produce 66 tons of Oxygen per day once fully grown, he further said. Nidahasa, a cultural and historical exhibition will commence on November 17 at Independence Square till November 20.

After the President’s second term, Sri Lanka will travel towards a development era, said Irrigation and Water Resource Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

The Government has taken measures to launch short-term development project s in every village on November 20 covering 14,000 villages islandwide. Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Public Administration Minister John Seneviratne were also present.
