UPFA sweeps Badulla District

The United People’s freedom alliance (UPFA) has cruised through in the Badulla district by obtaining a total number of 259,069 votes (67.79%) while the UNP is placed second, gaining 98,635 votes (25.81%).

In 2004, UPFA gained 169,197 votes in the Badulla district, while the UNP obtained 119,171 votes. In 2009, the UPFA has been able to significantly increase its vote base by gaining almost 90,000 additional votes, while the UNP’s popularity has seen a decline of around 21,000 votes.
This is yet another remarkable electoral victory for the UPFA government, which has convincingly and comfortably swept all the polling divisions in the BadullaDistrict - Mahiyangana, Bandarawela, Hali-Ela, Uva-Paranagama, Haputale, Badulla, Welimada, Passara and Wiyaluwa.
The overall result marks the overwhelming trust placed in the UPFA and its commitment to development in the districts. At a time when the Government has successfully and comprehensively eliminated terrorism and embarked on an unprecedented development-drive, the people have re-emphasized in clear and indubitable terms their confidence in the government.
During recent times, the country has witnessed major development projects in the Badulla district, concerning the spheres such as infrastructure development, education, irrigation, healthcare and water supply. Also, President Rajapaksa recently announced that measures will be taken to set up an industrial zone within the Uva province.
