Greatest responsibility to protect hard-won freedom - President

“It is with very much pleasure that I send this message of greetings on Ranaviru Day - set apart to commemorate the War Heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for the unity of our motherland,” President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The message: “The cherished dream of peace that we as a nation yearned for decades has now come true.

“The honour for this should solely be with our armed forces.

Let us bow our heads in homage to those thousands who sacrificed life and limb for the freedom we enjoy today.

“It is our greatest responsibility to protect our hard won freedom. Ensuring that we leave no room for terrorism or separatism to raise their ugly heads again in this country is the greatest tribute we can pay to our heroes of war. “The entire nation should come forward and assist the families of those brave soldiers who died or were maimed in this great struggle for peace and unity. This is our duty and responsibility. I trust both the government and citizens will look after the welfare of Ranaviru families, to make them feel secure with the assurance that society at large has not forgotten them. I join the entire nation to salute all our War Heroes.”

ජාත්‍යන්තර න්‍යායපත්‍රවලට කොටු නො වී මෙරට ජනතා අවශ්‍යතා මත රට ගොඩනැගීමට සමස්ත ජනතාව ම එක්විය යුතු බව එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයේ මහලේකම් ඛනිජ ‍තෙල් කර්මාන්ත අමාත්‍ය සුසිල් ප්‍රේම් ජයන්ත මහතා නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් කියා සිටී.

ත්‍රස්තවාදයට ගොදුරු වූ රටක් ඉන් මුදා ගැනීම ඉතා ම අසීරු කාර්යයක් සේ ම මුදාගත් රටක් වෙත පැමිණෙන කුමන්ත්‍රණකාරී බලවේගයන් ගෙන් මිදී එම රට තුළ සාමය හා සංවර්ධනය ස්ථාපිත කිරීමද ඉතා ම අසීරු කටයුත්තකි.

වීරෝධාර රණ විරුවන් ලේ කඳුළු හෙළා දුක් සුසුම් මැද වසර 30ක ත්‍රස්තවාදයට ලක් වූ ශ්‍රී ලංකාද්වීපය මුදාගෙන පළමු අසීරු කාර්ය ජයගෙන අවසන්ය. ඒ සමඟ ම දෙවන අසීරු කාර්යයට මුහුණ දීමට සිදු වී තිබේ.

වසර දෙකයි මාස 9ක කාලයක් තුළ ආරම්භ කළ මානුෂික මෙහෙයුම තුළින් වසර 30ක ත්‍රස්තවාදයඅවසන් වීම නිසා අද වැඩියෙන් ම සතුටු වන්නේ උතුරු නැඟෙනහිර ජනතාවයි. ත්‍රස්තවාදි ග්‍රහණයට ලක්වූ උතුරු නැගෙනහිර ප්‍රදේශවල එදා තිබූ තත්ත්වයත් අද තිබෙන තත්ත්වයත් දෙස විමසිලිමත්වීමෙන් මානූෂීය විජයග්‍රහණය කොතෙක් දැයි මොනවට පැහැදිලි වේ.

මේ වනවිට උතුරු නැගෙනහිර ප්‍රදේශයේ යළි පදිංචි කිරීමේ කටයුතු 95% ක් අවසන් කොට, එම ජනතාවගේ මූලික අවශ්‍යතා සියල්ල සපුරා යහපත් ජනජීවිතයක් ඔවුන්ට ලබාදීමට හැකිවීම මානුෂීය විජයග්‍රහණයේ දෙවන සංවත්සරය සමරණ මේ අවස්ථාවේ දී ඉමහත් සතුටට කරුණකි.

ත්‍රස්තවාදය නිසා අහිමි ව ගිය සිය සියලු භෞතික වස්තූන් උතුරු නැඟෙනහිර ප්‍රමුඛ සමස්ත ජනතාව වෙත නැවත ලබා දීම රජයේ ප්‍රථම කාර්යභාරය කොට ගෙන සිටී. එවැනි අවස්ථාවක මෙරට සංස්කෘතිය අවශ්‍යතා, භූගෝලීය පිහිටීම, ඉතිහාසය ආදිය පිළිබඳ ව කිසිත් නොදන්නා ජාත්‍යන්තරයේ ඇතමුන් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට අනවශ්‍ය මැදිහත්වීම් කරමින් සිටී.

රටේ ව්‍යවස්ථාව කුමක්ද? එය සංශෝධනය විය යුත්තේ කෙසේද? බලතල බෙදිය යුත්තේ කෙසේද? ආදි වූ කාරණා අපගේ ජනතාව තීරණය කළ යුතු ඒවා මිස කුමන රටකට හෝ ජාත්‍යන්තරයකට තීන්දු කිරීමට හැකියාවක් නැත.

ජාත්‍යන්තර න්‍යාය පත්‍රවලට කොටු නො වී මෙරට ජනතා අවශ්‍යතා මත රට ගොඩනැගීමට සමස්ත ජනතාව ම එක්විය යුතුයි. එසේ ම සාමය සෞභාග්‍ය ස්ථාපිත රටක් නිර්මාණය කිරීමට රණ විරුවන් ඇතුළු සමස්තය කළ කැපවීම් සඳහා හෘදයාංගම ප්‍රණාමය මානුෂීය විජයග්‍රහණයේ දෙවන සංවත්සරය දී එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයේ සියලු ම පක්ෂ සමස්ත ජනතාව වෙත පුදකර සිටිමු.

President's Vesak message

It is with immense fervor and devotion that we celebrate, with full State patronage, the thrice blessed festival of Vesak this year, which also marks the 26th Sammasambuddhatva Jayanthi. Through 2600 years the teachings of the Buddha have shown the correct path of livelihood to mankind. The comfort and consolation these provided to humans remain immeasurable. Today, our motherland is honoured throughout the world for preserving the teachings of the Buddha in their pristine purity through two millennia and more.

In achieving a lasting and sustainable peace in our land and help us move to our goals of development, we have sought to follow the teachings of the Sakyamuni Sammasambuddha that showed the path to free us from the four evil dispositions of desire, hatred, fear and ignorance.

Accordingly, the policies of our government give the foremost place to the Buddha Dhamma.

Akkodhena jine kodham - asaadhum saadhunaa jine

Jine kadariyam daanena - saccena alikavaadinam

"Let an angry man be conquered by love; an evil man by goodness. Let a miser be won over by liberality; and a liar by truthfulness", states the Dhammapada in the "Koda Vagga". This exhortation of the Buddha should always nurture us in facing up to all challenges.

The teachings of the Buddha help us to bring to the world the means of resolving all disputes that arise from unbridled desire. Thus it behoves upon us to give to the world the path to peace and consolation from these great teachings of the Sammasambuddhatva or Great Enlightenment of the Buddha, 2600 years ago.

On this Vesak festival it should be our determination to take refuge in the teachings of the Buddha, and through the proper observation of the teachings of Buddhism make this 2600 Sammasambuddhatva Jayanthi meaningful to all people.

සම්බුදු දහමින් ලෝක සත්ත්වයා ලැබූ සැනසීම අනන්තය-අප්‍රමාණය - ජනපති

රටට ගෞරවණීය සාමය උදාකිරීමේදී මෙන්ම මාතෘ භූමිය සංවර්ධනය කරා ගෙනයෑමේදී පිළිපදින්නේ සම්මා සම්බුදු රජාණන් වහන්සේ පෙන්වා දුන් සතර අගතියෙන් තොර වූ ධර්මය පෙරටු කැර ගත් රාජ්‍ය ප්‍රතිපත්තිය යැයි 2600 ශ්‍රී සම්බුද්ධත්ව ජයන්තිය නිමිත්තෙන් විශේෂ පණිවුඩයක් නිකුත් කරමින් මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ ජනාධිපතිතුමා සඳහන් කරයි. එම නිවේදනයේ මෙසේද දැක්වෙයි. පූර්ණ රාජ්‍ය අනුග්‍රහය ඇතිව 2600 වන සම්බුද්ධත්ව ජයන්ති වෙසක් මහා මංගල්‍යය අප සමරන්නේ දැඩි භක්ත්‍යාදරයෙන් යුතුවය.

සම්බුද්ධ දේශනාව වසර දෙදහස් හයසියයක් මුළුල්ලේ සමස්ත සමාජයට ම නිවැරැදි ජීවන මඟ පෙන්වා දී තිබේ. සකල ලෝක සත්වයා ඉන් ලැබූ සැනසීම අනන්ත ය. අප්‍රමාණය. අප මාතෘ භූමිය ලෝකයේ ගෞරවයටත්, අභිමානයටත් පාත්‍ර වන්නේ එවැනි උතුම් දහමක් වසර දහස් ගණනක පටන් රැකගත් නිසාත්, එම දහමට අනුව ජීවන පිළිවෙත හැඩ ගසාගත් නිසාත්ය.

”ක්‍රෝධ කරන්නා මෛත්‍රී කිරීමෙන් දිනිය යුතු ය. අසත්පුරුෂයා සත්පුරුෂකමින් දිනිය යුතුªය. මසුරා ත්‍යාගයෙන් ද, බොරු කියන්නා සත්‍යයෙන් ද දිනිය යුතුය.” යනුවෙන් සම්බුදු දේශනාවේ සඳහන් වේ. අප හමුවට එන සියලු අභියෝගවල දී මෙකී උතුම් දහමෙන් පෝෂණය වූ ආදර්ශය ලොවට ප්‍රදර්ශනය කළ යුතු වන්නේය.

තෘෂ්ණාව හේතුවෙන් ලොව හටගත් සියලු ගැටුම් නිරාකරණය වී සත් වගට මෙත් පතුරණ මඟ අප ලෝකයට විවර කර දිය යුතු ය. නිවෙන සැනසෙන ලෝකයක් ගොඩ නැඟීමට ධර්මයෙහි මඟ පෙන්වීම ලබා දිය යුතුය. අප තථාගතයන් වහන්සේගේ අවසන් බුද්ධ වචනයට අනුව ප්‍රතිපත්ති පූජාවට මුල් තැන දී නොපමාව කුසල් දහම් රැස් කොට සම්බුද්ධත්ව ජයන්ති වෙසක් මංගල්‍යය අර්ථවත් කර බුදුන් වහන්සේ සරණ යාමට අදිටන් කර ගනිමු.

Mahanayaka Theras, President, PM to participate in State Vesak Festival

The State Vesak Festival and Sambuddhathva Jayanthi celebrations will be held on May 14 at Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Premises in Anuradhapura to mark the 2600th year of the Enlightenment of The Buddha.

The Mahanayaka Theras of Asgiri, Malwatte and Amarapura Chapters will officiate at the Sambuddhathva Jayanthi celebrations.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D M Jayaratne will participate in the event in Anuradhpapura. President Rajapaksa is expected to declare a Vesak Week from May 14 to 21.

A Sambuddhatva Year will be declared on this occasion with the unveiling of a Sambuddhathva statue, said officials at the Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Ministry.

President Rajapaksa will also release special Sumbuddhathva Jayanthi commemorative coins and stamps to mark the event.

The Buddhist Affairs Department said, special Vesak programmes will also take place on May 17at historic Matara Kotikagoda Rajamaha Viharaya.

Vesak procession will start from Matara Bodhiya at 7 pm on May 21.

Special Vesak programmes will be held at Gangarama Hunupitya, under the patronage of the President’s Office.

Blessings invoked on President and country

The Jaya Pirith Chanting with the participation of 3,000 Buddhist monks representing all districts in the country was held at the BMICH to invoke blessings on the President and the country for the fourth time in succession. This pirith chanting ceremony is organized by the Defence Ministry.

Mahanayaka of Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven Udugama Buddarakkitha Thera, Anunayaka Thera of Malwatta Chapter Ven Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera, President of Amarapura Sangha Sabha and Chief Incumbent of Dharmapalaramaya, Mount Lavinia Ven Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera were among the erudite monks who participated in the pirith chanting ceremony at the BMICH.

Chief Incumbent of Kelaniya Vidyalankara Pirivena and Chief Sangha Nayaka Thera of Colombo and Chilaw Division Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera in his Anusasana said that the country was free of terrorism due to the dynamic leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Thera added that the country is treading the path of development and the objective of the pirith chanting ceremony is to invoke blessings on the President and all countrymen.

Thera lauded the effort of Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who took great efforts in organizing this event for the fourth year in succession.

Anunayaka Thera of Malwatta Chapter Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera in an Anusasana said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa deserves credit for eliminating terrorism in the country. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were among those present.

Sri Lanka declares May 14 to 20 as Vesak week

The Government has declared the period from May 14 to 20 as the vesak week. The government has also selected the theme of the 2600th Sambuddathwa jayanthiya “Let’s Disciplined for 2600th Sambuddathwa Jayanthiya as the theme for the Vesak as well.

May 17 and 18 have already been declared as the Public, Bank and
mercantile holiday in view of the vesak.

Meanwhile all liquor shops, Race Bookies, casinos and night clubs will
be closed and the sale of liquor at Super Markets will also be banned
on May 16, 17 and 18 for the vesak.

Further, all meat stalls closed and the sale of meat at super markets
will also be banned on May 17 and 18.

Govt saved thousands of lives - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that certain elements with vested interests were trying to find fault with the country’s accomplishment of ending terrorism, which caused unprecedented destruction in the country for over 30 long years.

He noted that there were elements within who send reports detrimental to the country to earn dollars and petty political mileage.

He pointed out that the government had been able to stop the 30 year long carnage, save thousands of human lives, create a society in which everybody could live without fear, rehabilitate youth who were led on the wrong path and fast track development which was lagging behind for the last 30 years.

The President emphasized that the government had conducted a humanitarian mission to save thousands of lives and added that in this backdrop surfacing of certain allegations on the accomplishment without substantial proof was unfortunate.

He noted the above addressing over 3,000 midwives at Temple Trees who had gathered to commemorate International Midwifery Day – 2011.

He noted that the government was now fully focused on rebuilding the destroyed infrastructure and fast tracking development which was lagging behind.

He said that the Government had the determination to face any challenge and was committed to stand up to its responsibility of taking the country forward.

In this backdrop he said that the Government appreciates the stand taken by the people to support its endeavours with one voice. He also urged all to act prudently with the best interest of the country in mind.

On the service rendered by Midwives President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the country appreciated the excellent service provided by them and added they had a responsibility in helping the mother to raise a healthy and productive child.

He also said that Sri Lanka had emerged as one of the top country’s in the region when it came to child and maternity care. He also highlighted the fact of midwife Lalitha Padmini emerging as one of the top four in her profession in a global competition and added that the midwife fraternity could be proud of these achievements.

He also advised them to concentrate on alleviating mal-nutrion among children.

The President told them to use their influence at village level to convince people on the value of cultivating food crops in their home gardens. This in turn could effectively contribute to the enhancement of nutritional levels of the family, specially the mother and the child, he added. The event was organized by the Government Midwifery Service Association. The theme of this year was an efficient midwifery service for safe motherhood.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Dr. Umanga Sooriyarachchi, Midwifery Association Secretary Devika Kodituwakku, Chairman, State Services Trade Union, W.H. Piyadasa too addressed the gathering.

Awards were presented to several midwives for their outstanding contributions, including Lalitha Padmini who rose to international fame due to her achievements.
