The entire country is geared to welcome the first peacetime New Year after the end of the three-decade long war. The country is especially elated with the re-election of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January and last Thursday’s victory of his government just ahead of the dawn of the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the Sun moving from the House of Pisces to the Aries
The New Year dawns at the auspicious time of 6.58 a.m. today. Punya kalaya will begin at 34 minutes past midnight and end at 1.22 p.m. The first part of the “Punya kalaya” is set aside for religious ceremonies while the second part is for traditions such as preparing meals, starting work and transactions for the New Year.
The New Year will dawn at 6.58 a.m.14th April. The auspicious time for the lighting of the hearth is 7.01 a.m 14th April facing the North and attired in light green coloured clothing. Milk rice mixed with Ghee and Undu should be prepared.
The auspicious for the commencement of work for the New Year, transactions and partaking of meals is at 9.07 a.m. 14th April. This should be done also facing the North and attired in light green coloured clothing.
10.06 a.m. on Thursday the 15th is the auspicious time for anointing of oil. Attired in gold coloured garments and facing the North, oil mixed with essence of bo-leaves and standing on Kohomba leaves under a canopy of bo-leaves should be anointed.
